The pair fell -0.49% across the week to settle at \u20ac1.1543 on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The UK market is closed on Friday for the Good Friday public holiday, but the pound still fell 0.5% over the week as investors continued to assess the implications of the Iran war for the UK economy.<\/p>\n<p>According to a Bank of England survey, British companies expect to raise prices more quickly over the next 12 months as they respond to a surge in energy costs linked to the Middle East conflict. At the same time, firms also expect to cut jobs and raise pay more slowly than previously anticipated.<\/p>\n<p>The latest monthly Bank of England report showed that businesses now expect prices to rise by 3.7% over the next year, the highest reading since October, up from 3.4% in the February survey.<\/p>\n<p>Firms also expect year-ahead wage growth to slow to 3.4%, the lowest reading since the series began in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>This combination points to a more uncomfortable backdrop for the Bank of England: higher inflation expectations but weaker wage growth and softer labour demand \u2014 a classic stagflationary mix.<\/p>\n<p>Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey reinforced this concern in an interview this week, warning that markets may be pricing in rate hikes too aggressively.<\/p>\n<p>Bailey said policymakers would need to keep a clear focus on risks to growth and employment, as well as inflation, and also noted that higher interest rates do not address the source of the shock when inflation is being driven externally by energy prices.<\/p>\n<p>His relatively dovish tone weighed on sterling over the course of the week.<\/p>\n<p>The euro rose against the pound this week and also managed to post gains against the US dollar, as markets remained highly focused on developments in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>Attention is now turning to the UN Security Council, which is preparing to vote on a key resolution aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz \u2014 the critical waterway through which roughly 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies are transported.<\/p>\n<p>Iran has effectively blocked the route to much of international shipping since the US and Israel launched military operations at the end of February.
