The pair fell 0.19% in the previous session, settling on Thursday at 153.12. On Friday at 21:00 UTC, USD\/JPY traded+1.08% at 154.77 and traded in a range of 152.87 to 154.81.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese yen fell sharply on Friday after Tokyo inflation cooled by more than expected. Tokyo consumer inflation slowed to 1.5% year on year in January, falling below 2% for the first time since October 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The decline was mainly due to lower food and energy prices. Core inflation excluding fresh food and energy eased to 2.4%.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst headline inflation is expected to decline further over the year, the Bank of Japan is expected to prioritise core and underlying inflation trends. If these remain above 2% and wage growth is steady, the central bank could hike rates further.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. dollar rose across the board. The US dollar index, which measures the USD against a basket of currencies, rose 0.74% on Friday to 96.99, after losses on Thursday. The USD fell across the week.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. dollar rebounded sharply on Friday, recovering from a four-year low reached earlier in the week.<\/p>\n<p>The dollar recovered after President Trump announced Kevin Warsh to be the next Federal Reserve chair, replacing Jerome Powell when his term ends in May<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Warsh was previously known as a hawk; however, his position has shifted and is now more aligned with Trump&#8217;s wishes to lower borrowing costs. However, Warsh also believes in shrinking the Fed&#8217;s balance sheet.<\/p>\n<p>As well as digesting the announcement of the next Fed chair, economic data showed that the producer price index rose 0.5% last month, well above the 0.2% expected, following an unrevised 0.2% gain in November.
