The pair rose by 0.43% in the previous session, settling on Thursday at \u20ac1.1895. It traded between \u20ac1.1833 and \u20ac1.1913. At 12:30, GBP\/EUR trades -0.07% at \u20ac1.1886. After five weeks of gains, the pair is on track to fall 0.04% across the week.<\/p>\n<p>The pound is modestly lower against the euro on Friday but has risen to its highest level since February 2022 against the US dollar, boosted by recent UK data. Figures today showed UK retail sales jumped in April by a much stronger than expected 1.2% month-on-month increase after 0.1% decline in March. This was much stronger than the 0.2% increase that economists had expected and marked the 4th back-to-back monthly increase in sales, a run not seen since 2020. Outside of the pandemic, this month has seen the strongest run of retail sales growth since 2004.<\/p>\n<p>Strong retail sales come as the UK jobs market remains resilient, wage growth is solid, and consumer confidence shows signs of improving.<\/p>\n<p>Strong retail sales combined with stronger-than-expected GDP data and hotter-than-forecast inflation mean the Bank of England will likely take its time cutting interest rates further.<\/p>\n<p>The euro is rising versus the pound and against a weaker U.S. dollar as it benefits from growing concerns over the US fiscal outlook. The Euro is the most liquid alternative to the US dollar.<\/p>\n<p>Still, gains in the EUR could be limited given expectations that the ECB will cut rates again in June by 25 basis points, bringing the deposit rate to 2%. The market is expected to make a further 25 basis point rate cut in December.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday&#8217;s data supports the ECB\u2019s dovish stance after a worrying decline in service sector activity. The composite PMI, which is considered a good gauge for business activity, contracted in May.<\/p>\n<p>There is no further eurozone economic data this week.
