The pair rose 0.4% in the previous session, settling on Wednesday at \u20ac1.1902. It traded in a range between \u20ac1.1844 and \u20ac1.1919. At 15:30 UTC, GBP\/EUR is trading 0.20% at \u20ac1.1916.<\/p>\n<p>The euro is falling against the pound and the US dollar as trade tensions mount. On Wednesday, Trump applied 25% trade tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Canada, Australia, and the EU. The EU retaliated. The EU announced plans for \u20ac26 billion of counter-tariffs on US goods being imported into the region starting in April, focusing specifically on steel, aluminium, textiles, leather goods, beef, and more.<\/p>\n<p>As the trade tensions escalated, President Trump today threatened to impose a 200% tariff on all wines, champagnes, and other alcoholic beverages from the EU, raising fears of a full-blown trade war.<\/p>\n<p>These concerns are overshadowing developments regarding the Ukraine war. Russian leader Putin said he would agree to the US ceasefire but on his terms.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the eurozone economic calendar was quiet. Attention will be on German inflation figures tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>The pound was pushing higher against the EUR but falling against the USD as the UK side stepped a tit for trade war with the US. While the US applied trade tariffs on UK steel and aluminium imports, the UK has not retaliated.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, data shows that the UK&#8217;s housing markets had its lowest month in over a year in February. The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors showed that buyer demand was its weakest since November 2023, and a further softening is expected in the months ahead with the stamp duty increase coming in April.<\/p>\n<p>The UK housing market had gathered speed in recent months amid expectations of Bank of England interest rate cuts and buyers seeking to beat the March 31st expiry of tax breaks.
