The pair rose 0.06% in the previous session, settling on Tuesday at \u20ac1.1981 and trading in a range between \u20ac1.1950 and \u20ac1.2006. At 19:00 UTC, GBP\/EUR trades +0.11% at \u20ac1.1996.<\/p>\n<p>The pound is drifting higher in a quiet day for economic data, although comments from Bank of England&#8217;s Clare Lombardelli have underpinned the pound this week after she made the case for gradual rate cuts on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The money markets are pricing in a base rate of 4% by the end of 2025 down from its current levels of 4.75%. This implies 75 basis points worth of cuts over the coming year.<\/p>\n<p>The UK economic calendar remains quiet again tomorrow, so sentiment could drive sterling.<\/p>\n<p>The euro fell against the pound after German consumer confidence deteriorated more than expected at the end of the year. The German consumer sentiment index tumbled to a nine-month low amid rising fears of a recession.<\/p>\n<p>The GfK consumer sentiment index fell to -23.3 in December from a revised -18.4 in November. This was below the -18.8 that economists had expected.<\/p>\n<p>Consumer sentiment in the region hit its lowest level since May this year amid rising concerns over job security and falling income expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Lower consumer confidence often results in consumers spending less, which is bad news for the economy.<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, attention will turn to German inflation data tomorrow, which is expected to show That consumer prices increased to 2.2% underlay in November, up from 2% in October.
