The pound euro (GBP/EUR) exchange rate fell on Friday but booked gains across the week, marking the third straight weekly rise.
The pound fell on Friday despite CBI retail sales rising to +4 from -17 in August, although this remains low by historical stancdards.
The euro rose despite more weak data from Germany. While unemployment remained at 6%, the number of unemployed rose by a seasonally adjusted 17,000, up from 2000 in August.
The data comes after a series of weak German data raises concerns that the eurozone’s largest economy is heading to a recession.
Eurozone economic sentiment also declined to 96.2 as the economy struggled to recover.
